About the event
/Resonance: Mazzy Stargazing
Mazzy Star emerged from California's Paisley Underground movement of the early 1980s, with founder David Roback drawing from his psychedelic revival work in the Rain Parade and Opal. The band blended shadowy psychedelia with sparse folk, blues, and Americana creating what became the blueprint for modern dream pop.
Their influences ran deep into classic rock: critics compared their sound to the Velvet Underground and the Doors while Hope Sandoval's hypnotic vocals and Roback's hazy guitar work channeled 1960s psychedelia through a melancholic 90s lens.
Their impact on alternative music has been profound. Artists like Beach House, Lana Del Rey, and Daughter have incorporated elements of Mazzy Star's dream pop into their sound. Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die" explicitly examined the LA darkness that lurked in Mazzy Star's music, helping make them part of latter-day pop's musical DNA. Even Kurt Cobain listed their debut "She Hangs Brightly"…
